Important for Sunday!

Friday, July 30th, 2010

THIS SUNDAY AND NEXT HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED AS “UNDIE-SUNDAY” — SUPPORT OUR LOCAL KIDS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

Our church has committed to providing underwear and socks for needy children in our community. This is YOUR chance to make a difference in a very practical way.

There’s not a lot of time before school starts so PLEASE stop by the display at the south entrance to the church on Sunday morning or stop by the church office and pick up the information needed so you can shop for as many children as you are able and bring the items to the church by Monday, August 9th.

This is an ambitious project but WE CAN DO IT! Let’s all MAKE A DIFFERENCE together!

Did you hear?

Parking lot bumpers?

You may have noticed the new parking lot bumpers in the South Lot. WHY?! Well, as we grow (hurray!), our parking has been getting tighter and tighter.  We’ve even had some fender-benders! If you were a (nervous) new person, would you want to fight the parking?

So, the easiest (and least expensive) way to help the situation was to put the traffic bumpers and reflectors.  YOU can do your part to make our parking lots less of a turn-off for new people: Please try to park in the slots and follow the traffic flow (counter-clockwise).

Lobby Donuts and Tables?

In our quest to make sure that we are doing everything we can to make new people welcome to our church, we are considering bringing some coffee, juice, and donuts down to the South Lobby (the entrance by the Sanctuary).  This may also include a few little stand up tables so people can stand around it set their coffee cup down and eat a donut.  This is based on observations from other churches and how people (especially nervous new folks)  start to form relationships.  That’s what we’re about, right?

Don’t panic!  We’ll still have stuff in the Fellowship Hall.  Are you helping to build new relationships or (only) nurturing your current ones?  Something to think about.

How does your garden grow?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Come out to the Salem Community Garden to celebrate summer on Thursday, July 22 from 6-8 p.m. and see what’s growing at the garden!

Bring your gloves and help harvest vegetables for donations to local service organizations, mulch pathways and help clean up the garden.  Light refreshments and lemonade will be available.

Haven’t been to the garden before? Come out and meet the community gardeners and learn about how you can get involved in growing good food! Any (and all!) volunteers are welcome!   Learn about upcoming gardening workshops and events. Call Sarah Massengale at Dent County Extension 729-3196 with questions. The garden is located at the Salem United Methodist Church (at the back of the main parking lot).

Love Bears!

Friday, July 9th, 2010

It's the little things!

They’re cute!  They’re cuddly!  Yes, you’ve seen them in the South Entrance and in the Sanctuary, but did you know they’re also an important ministry here at Salem UMC?

These little cuties are a simple outreach to anyone who needs a little fuzzy hug to make them feel better.  This unique and touching ministry was started here back in 2005 and has spread as far as Texas and California.

It may seem like such a little thing, but sometimes it’s the little things that can show someone who’s hurting the love of Christ.

If you’d like to be a part of an adorable outreach ministry, please contact the office.  You’ll be touching hearts!

5th Sunday lunch is coming!

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

This coming Sunday is the 5th one of the month!  That means…  5th Sunday Lunch!!!

announcementIf you’re not familiar with the Salem UMC world famous 5th Sunday meal, this is a great way for the folks from the different services (and new friends) to meet and catch up.  Attire is casual (as usual) - jeans or even overalls!

Jack Blackwell has done a great job of leading this wonderful time of gathering (yeah, he’s pretty much awesome).  He’s preparing BBQ chicken, so you are invited to bring veggies, salads, or deserts that compliment it.  The folks from the 1030 service will ready the meals and tables, while the 11:00 service folks are in charge of cleanup activities.  Jack’s really gotten this thing working, but he needs your help! Please contact him - many hands make light work!

EXTRA…..EXTRA….  Why don’t you bring lawn chairs and blankets and we will have a  picnic.  There will be tables and chairs, but this might be lots more  fun!

NOTE: 5th Sundays are also great time for folks that are new or thinking about worshiping with us, so make sure everyone feels welcome!

Sign up by calling Kim or Debra at 729-3500, extension 13 or 14
