Break the Bank!

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Thanksgiving is coming fast!  You can start your giving of thanks by joining with our own UMW in supporting this year’s World Thank Offering.  The event is called, “Break the Bank.”   Salem has had the largest offering for the last few years – lets keep up the good work!

The World Thank Banks need to be turned into the office or brought to the meeting. The meeting is November 11 at 10:00 at the church. It’s a fun meeting because we get to separate all that money.  Please come join us!!!

Classic Christmas (need)

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

We are having a Vintage Christmas Booth again this year. If you have any Christmas decorations that you would like to donate, please bring them on November 4 or 5. If you have any questions, Call Gerry Harris or Carolyn Battey, they are the brains behind the bazaar ( or bizarre brains?)

Spotlight on: Backpack Program!

Monday, May 18th, 2009

We have a new outreach to the schools of Dent County called Love Packs.  Love Packs isn’t an original idea, but a copy of an idea finding great success around the country. It works something like this:

Many school children are eligible for free and reduced price breakfast and lunch at school each weekday. This program is awesome, but come the weekend what do these kids do?  Truth be told, some of these kids have little or nothing to eat each weekend.  Love Packs is a program to help with this need.  A back pack is filled with nutritious food to feed a child for the weekend and sent home with select children The pack includes dinner Friday evening, and 3 meals for Saturday and Sunday, assuring the kids don’t miss a meal during the weekend.  The program is in it’s infancy in Dent County, but we have had a wonderful and supportive beginning.backpacks

The children are selected by the principals at each school served, we have no input in who is served. This provides anonymity for the children and places the distribution with the person best equipped to provide the needed resources.

Thus far we have had $3,766.00 donated to the cause, commodities have been donated by 8 entities, and 1 entity has given us 10% off the retail cost of products. These donations have come form 32 different sources.

We have spent $2,623.52 of our donated resources to pack 276 packs between March 1 and May 21st. This distribution has been through 5 different schools in Dent County. We began packing 10 packs a week and have expanded to the point we are packing 45 packs a week with the help of 10 volunteers.

If you would like to help with donations they can be sent to the church or given to Jann Craig. Please mark your donations, “Love Packs”. Volunteers are also needed, please give Jann a call to get involved.

WOW! What an afternoon! (Spring Luncheon)

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

This last Saturday, the ladies of Salem UMC hosted their annual Spring Luncheon and it was AWESOME!   The 24 tables were beautifully decorated in a variety of colors and themes. There were so many lovely dishes and accessories that even many “experienced” luncheon-goers commented it might have been the best one ever. Well, maybe not ever, but definitely a true topper on the charts.

The food was wonderful and the entertainment provided by The Jeweltones was outstanding. The Jeweltones provided quality music with such a wide range of vocal ability by all of the ladies. They were definitely a highlight to our day.

Thank you so much to all of the people who provided food, labor, and table settings. It could not have been done without you. Thanks to all those who attended and we hope you’ll be able to attend next year’s luncheon.

“We go ’round in circles!” (New Women’s group forming)

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Hi Ladies!

As you may (or may not) know,  The United Methodist Women (UMW) is actually comprised of smaller groups – “circles” that focus on a particular topic or ministry.   There is a NEW CIRCLE forming!!!

images-2This new circle is designed for working women and is sure to be both fun and inspiring.  Since in is still in the pre-launch mode, each member will have a role in establishing the personality and goals of the group.   We don’t even have a name yet!   The regular meeting time will be the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

This “new circle” will have it’s first meeting May 19, 6:30 in the church library.  Carol Walter will be the leader of the group.  If you’re interested or have questions, please call Carol or Jann.  All are welcome. We look forward to seeing YOU!!
