Community Wood Bank
The Community Wood Bank is housed on the grounds of Salem UMC. It is in all respects, as it says in the title, a community project. Yes some of those who attend Salem UMC cut wood and help stock the wood bank as do many others from the community. The wood bank is available to all who need firewood and are not able to cut or purchase their own.
Thank you to all who have provided wood. Thanks to you others will be able to stay warm this winter. |
Community Garden
In 2017 there were 19 families/organizations involved in the garden. This resulted in there being about 45 gardeners. In addition there were 45-50 volunteers that helped out on various work days. The volunteers came through the local schools, Latter Day Saints missionaries, MAS, and other community volunteers. If you would like to have a garden spot or simply want to help out contact University of Missouri Extension at 729-3196.

LovePacks Backpack Program
Just what is a LovePack?? It is a pack of individual serving foods placed in bags by people who care about our Dent County children, then distributed to 8 Dent County schools to be placed in the backpacks of children that are suffering hunger distress over the weekend. The food products are non-perishable, easily opened and do not have to be cooked. The children that receive the LovePacks are determined by the school administrators. This program began in 2009 and today serves approximately 185 kids each week.
This program is housed at Salem United Methodist Church but it is a community program. A community program that shows how effective we can be; the kind of impact we can have, the difference we can make when we work together for the common good. Proof of that is the 5922 packs that were distributed in 2017! All are welcome to participate. How can you help? There are many ways. We meet on Monday evenings at 5 to set out the food, and Tuesday mornings at 10 to pack and distribute the LovePacks. In addition supplies are delivered to the church at noon on Sunday at which time you have the opportunity to help unload and move the items to the storage room. Another way to help is by double bagging recycled plastic bags. And of course, you have the opportunity to donate to LovePacks by sending your gift to LovePacks Backpack Program, 801 E. Scenic Rivers Blvd. Salem MO 65560. This is a tax deductible charitable contribution.
